Two Italians kidnapped presumably by Al-Qaeda

 

Two Italians were kidnapped Friday on a road south-eastern Mauritania. The kidnapping took place in the same manner as that of the three Spanishes in late November, which had been claimed by Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb. The pair of Italian travellers missing in the department of Kobeni Mauritania, has "probably been kidnapped by an armed group, announced Monday a Mauritanian security source.

Arrest of journalist and his printer for an article on Guinea
 

A Liberian journalist and a printer prisoners for several days in Monrovia, for publishing an article accusing the president of Liberia headed by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, to support Guinean dissidents to overthrow the junta.

Reporters Without Borders today called the "provisional release" of journalist Mickael Makinde and his printer Syrenius Cephys, both working for the Liberian Daily Plain Truth.

Legislative elections scheduled March 20, 2010
 

The head of the High Authority of transition, Andry Rajoelina, announced Wednesday the holding of legislative elections of Madagascar, on March 20, to elect a Constituent Assembly. However, the leader judged "impossible to work in cohabitation with the other three spheres of influence for the establishment of a unity government."

Wild pigs sow panic at the airport in Harare
 

The wild pigs are the bane of drivers who must maneuver on the airport in Harare, Zimbabwe. They have caused several accidents this year. Last week, a plane of South African Airways collided with two pigs, said Tuesday the director of Air Zimbabwe, Peter Chikumba,.

On November 2, an Air Zimbabwe had also struck a pig wandering on the runway, without casualties. After the accident last week, park rangers called to the rescue, have captured 90 wild pigs. The birds also represent a hazard to aircraft, according to Peter Chikumba, but the Zimbabwean authorities fail to collect the funds needed to address these problems.

Central Market of Douala gutted by fire
 

A fire ravaged Tuesday, the central market of Douala, south-west Cameroon. The authorities had not yet made a record Tuesday night. According to various sources of police, military and firefighters, there was not dead. Several people, including firefighters, smoke inhalation from the fire, however, were transported to the hospital.

We've learned when to press yesterday, that Mr. Jean-Bosco Talla, the managing editor of “Germinal”, the weekly newspaper in Cameroon is held at the Secretariat of State for Defense, in Yaounde since Thursday, December 10, 2009. This inquiry follows the publication of an article on a probable "secret pact" between Ahmadou Ahidjo and Paul Biya in the latest edition of Germinal.

In June last, Jean-Bosco Talla said receiving death threats via SMS, following the publication of the report of the NGO Catholic Committee against Hunger and Development (CCFD) about “ill-gotten property of President Paul Biya, the report in which the editorial director of Germinal had helped write as a member of that association.

Egypt wants compensation before returning its ambassador to Algiers
 

Egypt will return its ambassador to Algeria, recalled in November in a crisis of qualification for the World Cup in 2010 if it obtains compensation for damage suffered in this country.
